Professional Cleaning and Exam

You and each member of your—including children over the age of four—stand to benefit from have your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year by one of our skilled hygienists. We trust that you brush and floss every day at home. But on your own, there may be spots in your mouth that are difficult to reach. We take the time to individually clean and polish each tooth, and we floss well between all of your teeth, including behind your last molars. In addition, if we find any hardened plaque (tartar) above the gum line, we can remove this with special instruments. These appointments are also the time when we look at each tooth for signs of decay or damage.

Oral Cancer Screening

Worldwide, one person dies every hour from an oral cancer. Just in the United States, there are more than 8,000 deaths each year. As with most cancers, the key to survival is early detection. That’s why Dr. Scott and his staff perform an oral cancer screenings at each checkup. We are looking for a sore that hasn’t healed; a red or white scaly patch; or a lump or thickening is any soft tissue. Other signs that you should be aware of and tell us about include difficulty swallowing, numbness in your mouth or the feeling of an earache.


Otherwise known as teeth grinding and clenching, bruxism is a reaction to stress. If you grind or clench your teeth, you may notice that you have headaches, jaw pain and sore muscles when you open or close your mouth. Dr. Scott can prescribe a custom-fitted mouthguard for you to wear at night—when most bruxism occurs—that will absorb pressure and protect your teeth.
