If it seems to be working well and doing its job, you may think
there’s no need to buy a new one. However, there are many good reasons to
replace your toothbrush every three to four months. If you aren’t replacing
yours regularly, you may be overdue to get a new toothbrush.

Keeping Clean: Reasons to Replace Your Toothbrush

It’s often hard to tell when your toothbrush is past its
prime. It may look and feel like it’s doing its job. However, there are many
things that you can’t see that impact how effective your toothbrush is, such as:

Because of their direct contact with your mouth, toothbrushes are riddled with germs and bacteria. The longer you use a toothbrush, the more germs build up in the bristles, making you vulnerable to infections.

Toothbrushes pick up household germs. If you or a family member has recently been sick, replace all toothbrushes in the house.

Even though it may still look up to par, toothbrushes that have been used for more than forty days are significantly less able to clear plaque from your teeth, leaving you vulnerable to cavities and gum disease.

What to Look for in Your Next Toothbrush

Brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice a day is the most
important part of your at-home hygiene regimen. When you’re ready to replace
your toothbrush and are wondering what type is right for you, consider the
following:

Electric Toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes remove much more plaque
from your teeth than manual toothbrushes. If you have gum disease or are prone
to plaque buildup, they are a great option for you.

If you are undergoing orthodontic treatment,
electric toothbrushes to a great job of removing particles from between your
braces or other orthodontic appliances.

Since electric toothbrushes don’t require the
same amount of movement sd manual toothbrushes, they are a good option for
people with limited mobility, such as those with carpal tunnel or arthritis.

Manual Toothbrushes

Manual toothbrushes are much cheaper than their
electric counterparts and can be purchased in many places.

Manual toothbrushes are far more portable and
don’t require a charge to work.

Regardless of which type of toothbrush you choose, the most
important thing is to make sure that your brush is doing its job. After three
or four months, replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head. Staying on top of
your oral hygiene through regular toothbrush replacement will keep you smiling
for a long time.

About the Author

Dr.
L.
